“Perpunte” or Sleeveless Gambeson from the 13th Century

This sleeveless gambeson, known as a “perpunte”, is influenced by Aragonese examples from the 13th century, although the Morgan or Maciejowski Bible also shows garments that could be interpreted in a similar way. The one shown in the mural painting of the Conquest of Mallorca, shows colorful perpuntes, like some kind of primitive heraldic motifs, making it somewhat resemble a padded surcoat. Made of quilted cotton, this gambeson offers additional protection, especially when worn over chainmail or another gambeson. Vents at the front and back provide ease of movement, essential on the battlefield. Adjustable ties at the back ensure a secure and customizable fit.
