This “tongue-shaped” brooch is a replica of the original found at the southwest from Nordfjord, in a burial mound near Gryta, Norway. It’s dated from the 9th-10th century. It is decorated in the Jelling style and it presents typical motifs of this artistic style: a snake or dragon that tangles sinuously and bites itself. Slightly larger than other similar brooches, this one has a sturdy needle and could easily be worn on garments made from thick wool. There are a few other examples of flat tongue-shaped brooches. Some of them were used as part of the feminine outfit, to hold the straps of the dress, in the same way as the well-known turtle brooches. This model has a ring at the bottom that can be used to hang necklaces or other ornaments, such as an amulets or personal hygiene accessories. Handmade of bronze. Measures: 7 x 5 cm. 0/5 (0 Reviews)
