Welcome to the Build Your Own Spadone page! We are excited to get Pre-Order batches of these great swords going a few times a year. These great sword trainers take a lot of planning and process development because of the oversized steel bars needed for the blades. These also require specially turned grip sections and hardened guard parts. In order to keep the cost as low as possible, we run these great-swords in batches to give us time to source the materials and feather the manufacturing process into our normal build queue. These blades also take a great deal of strength and endurance to grind and polish and not all of our blade makers can build them so it is necessary for us to limit the number built as to not put our makers through excessive physical stress. We will be running these batches 2 to 3 times yearly which means these are a limited production product. We try to get 3 of them built a week as orders come in so these may have a longer lead time than our other products. Now! Onto the swords. These “Great-swords” commonly referred to as the Spadone in 16th and 17th century Italy, are among the largest two handed swords made in Renaissance Europe. We have developed our versions based on historical examples and have tweaked the specs a bit to fit within the guidelines of safe sparring combat within HEMA and the SCA. For the blade we’ve selected a straight distal taper profile with a 4.75″ (12.2cm) wide spur style schilt. We offer two blade lengths; 50″ (127cm) and 46″ (117cm). The 46″ (117cm) blade length used in conjunction with our 12″ (30.5cm) grip maintains an overall sword length of 60″ (152.4cm) which is the maximum overall length allowed within the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). For combat disciplines that don’t have any overall sword length restrictions, the 50″ (127cm) blade can be chosen to create a sword as long as 66″ (167.6cm) long! These blades come with a swelled tip and are ground with a diamond distal taper in either F3 flex (SCA rapier combat) or F4 flex (SCA C&T/HEMA tournament flex). The guard design is an accurate two ring design that measures 15.25″ (38.8cm) from quillon tip to quillon tip. The side rings are 5.5″ (14cm) long by 2″ (5.2cm) tall. The quillons also boast an inner spur as was common on historical references. The guard is made from hardened SR500 impact resistant steel and is offered in 3 different finishes: Polished, Bright and Black Oxide. Because SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) requires swords to be less than 60″ (152.4cm), we are offering two grip lengths: 12″ (30.5cm) and 14″ (35.5cm). Both grip lengths are also offered with our 3 mil thick Legacy™ Protective coating or our EZ wrap cord wrap system. It takes just a few minutes to unwrap and re-wrap these grips with the use of a little hex wrench (included) so you can replace the cord with anything from 2mm cord of your choosing all the way up to 3/16″ parachute cord. Great for on the spot re-wraps or even just for color changes! Finally we have 3 pommel choices that were designed for the specific aesthetic you want: Scent Stopper, Wheel or Ring pommel. On top of everything the parts are completely modular with our patent pending X-Tang™ system. Our beloved 7075 aluminum core coated grips have been improved with greater tolerances and now boast a 3mil Legacy™ coating for extra impact resistance. These grips are the backbone of our X-Tang™ system. Switching them out is a snap because both of these grip lengths and the corresponding tang extension are sold separately. Because our Long Swords are completely modular, we will ship them disassembled to save you on shipping cost!
