This “tongue-shaped” brooch is a replica of the one exhibited at the British Museum. The provenance is unknown, as it was acquired through Lord Alistair McAlpine, a politician and famous collector and art dealer of British origin. It is decorated in the Borre style and dated from the 9th century. Slightly larger than other similar brooches, this one has a sturdy needle and could easily be worn on garments made from thick wool. There are a few other examples of flat tongue-shaped brooches. Some of them were used as part of the feminine outfit, to hold the straps of the dress, in the same way as the well-known turtle brooches. This model has a ring at the bottom that can be used to hang necklaces or other ornaments, such as an amulets or personal hygiene accessories. Handmade of bronze. Measures: 8.2 x 2.7 cm.
